In the Qing Dynasty, sardonyx was a kind of special ore under jade stone category. Due to its natural silky texture, sardonyx products are often made into bead-shaped objects for religious worship. It also represents the adoration of the eyes from our ancestors. Beginning from Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, this kind of agate has become one of the important color materials for snuff bottles. It is the aesthetic expression of the emperor according to his preferences and feats. According to some official records in the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong repeatedly gave orders to make snuff bottles out of sardonyx agate to reward his ministers in order to show the empire’s wealthy status.
