1937 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITOR'S BADGE
Made in brass and decorated with enamel, with lettering 'The Open Championship Carnoustie, 1937' beneath crown.
|Most likely the R&A approached the Lord Chamberlain's office for permission to use the King George VI crown in its elaborate yellow metal and purple enamel competitor's badge for the 1937 Open Championship at Carnoustie. Both Edward [1922] and George [1930] were keen golfers and ex R & A Captains. Up until that time, the competitors' badges were plain card tie-on badges. In 1938, Britain was preparing for war and although the Open was played in 1939 and 1940, the competitors' badges reverted to cardboard.
