China, late 18th- 19th centuryDelicately carved through the cinnabar-red overlay to the opaque turquoise ground with two crabs amidst lotus plants, the base formed as a lotus leaf.The combination of red overlay and turquoise glass became fashionable particularly towards the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. The turquoise-blue background is evocative of the summer sky leading to the typical design of landscape and outdoor scenes. The color combination with the design of the crabs in the present lot is therefore rather unusual.
