AN IVORY NETSUKE OF JUROJINIvory netsuke. Japan, 19th centuryJurojin, Japanese for “long-lived, old man”, is the god of longevity and scholarly success. Similar to Fukurokuju, he has an elongated head and a beard, but rarely laughs and is rather serious. He likes to sit on his mount, a deer, which is masterfully carved in this work, especially its beautifully shaped head. Jurojin is holding a fan and a staff, which resembles a thunderbolt. The facial expression as well as the folds and decorative patterns of the Chinese garment are very finely carved. The himotoshi are found on the back on the deer.
