FOUR SCHOLARS OF THE SAKYA-PA TRADITION, Tibet, ca. 17th ct. Tempera and gold on cotton, secondary brocade mounting. Showing the four patriarchs of the Sakya tradition, two of which are named by inscription. The figures in the upper half hold a sword and manuscript as well as a bell and vajra on blossoming branches in their hands. The figures in the lower half are depicted with the mudra of reasoning and a manuscript in the left hand as well as the mudra of teaching. Further, smaller depictions of lamas can be seen on the outer margins of the painting. Also shown is the yellow Simhanada-Manjushri, accompanied by four figures, another figure in a monk's robe, a white old man with a staff in his right hand wearing a scholar's hat, Sudodhana, a disciple of Manjushri. Central to the encounter of the four scholars is the appearance of the deity Guhyasamaya - "God of the Tantras".
