HIGH PATRIARCH OF THE GELUG-PA TRADITION, Tibet, 1st half 19th ct. Tempera and gold on cotton, original silk-satin mounting, the back with two hand imprints (!). The central figure of this Thangka is the high-ranking patriarch of the Yellow Church of Tibet, wearing the traditional yellow hat of the Geluk tradition. His precious clothing is that of a dignitary, with his scholar's robe made of golden satin, patterned with fine medallions, hemmed with a border of interwoven gold. He is seated on two pillows on a throne with a curvated backrest, covered with precious cloths, padded with a gold-interwoven brocade pillow. His right hand shows the mudra of teaching, in his left he is holding a manuscript of indigo-coloured paper above a black and golden silk cloth. Two attendants serve tea from a golden pot as well as a rice offering mandala. Above him the historical Buddha appears, accompanied by two scholars of the Geluk school. Numerous other figures of varying ranks and religious standing are scattered across the Thangka. Among others, tantric deities such as the wrathful Palden Lhamo, Beg-tse, and Brah-mse are also depicted. Due to the imprints of two pairs of hands on the back, this Thangka is a blessed image of veneration of one or more influential donors, possibly to the figure in the center.
