IN THE STYLE OF HUA YAN (1682-1756), The Nine Old Men of Xiangshan. China, probably 19th ct. Hand scroll, ink and light colours on silk. Signature at the end of the scroll: "The Nine Old Men. In winter of the jiachen year (1724) painted in the style of Ziwei (Tang Yin, 1470-1523) for the old gentleman .. Weng, Xinluo shanren Hua Yan." Two seals of the artist: "Hua Yan", "Qiuyue". Two collectors' seals. The painting shows one of the famous literati gatherings of Chinese history. In the year 845 nine old friends met in the garden of the famous poet Bo Juyi (772-846) of the Tang dynasty to indulge in literati activities. All members of the meeting were at an age of over sixty five. The picture shows them reading poetry, looking at paintings and discussing philosophic items while strolling through the landscape. The free, somewhat sketchy style reminds of Hua Yan, one of the so called 'Eight Eccentrics from Yangzhou', as stated in the signature. - Property from a European private collection, received as a gift in 1966.
