A THANGKA DEPICTING DORJE DROLOD - WILD AND WRATHFUL VAJRA, Bhutan, 1st half 19th ct. Tempera and gold on cotton, original silk satin mounting, with traditionally tie-dyed protective cloth, wooden bars and knobs. This painting originates from the same series of nine Thangkas as Lot 100 of this sale. These nine Thangkas show the guru Padmasambhava and his eight emanations. Bodhisattva Vajrapani appears in the top left corner, opposite the first king of Bhutan, Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal (1594-1651). The left side shows the famous poet Yogi Milarepa (1052-1135) inside a cave, in the lower right corner, a cleric rides on a white elephant, holding the attributes of a wandering monk: alms bowl and rattling staff. As rDo-rje gro-lod, Padmasambhava subjugated the treacherous ego and severed the karmic entanglement with the three-pronged Phur-bu as a tool. He has the strength to overcome self-deceit and illusion, caused by human perception. - Formerly property from an old German collection, acquired in the 1960s - Minor traces of age
