In the style of Jiao Bingzhen (active ca. 1689-1726), One Hundred Children Playing in the Garden, China, ca. 18th ct., Two panels with silk mounting, each 99 x 30,3 cm, ink and colors on silk. Each with signature in the lower part of the painting: "Respectfully painted by your subject Jiao Bingzhen". One double seal of the artist, not legible any more. Not genuine. In the upper part of each a poetic inscription, signed: "Respectfully inscribed by your subject Peng Yuanrui". One double seal: "Yuan", "Rui". Above in the middle of of each panel the collector's seal of the Qianlong emperor (reg. 1736-1795): "Qianlong yulan zhi bao". The two panels are part of an composition of four with the continuing scenery of a palace garden. Each panel shows one of the four seasons, the two remaining depicting spring and summer. The children, painted extraordinary vividly, are seen busy in a variety of plays according to the season. In the spring panel with blossoming trees they fish, exercise calligraphy in a pavilion and fly kites. In the summer panel they pick peaches, ride a Qilin and play blind man's buff - Property from an old German private collection, assembled in the 1950'ies and 60'ies - Jiao Bingzhen was a court painter in the Kangxi period (1662-1722) and received training in Western painting techniques by Europeans working at the court. He was especially famous for his figures with realistic shading and paintings of architecture with the use of Western perspective. Peng Yuanrui (1731-1803) was a high ranking minister at the Qianlong court and belonged to the editorial staff of the Qianlong emperor.
