STRASSER, ROLAND (Austria, 1895-1974), a painting of a Balinese dancer, colorfully dressed with elaborated head ornament. Signed lower right - Born in Vienna in 1895, Roland Strasser was a son of the painter and sculptor Arthur Strasser. After having studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1911 to 1915, he went on a journey to Asia after Word War I. He travelled widely in Indonesia, China, Tibet, India and Japan and finally settled on the Island of Bali, where he spent about 10 years. After World War II he lived in London and later moved to the US. He died in California in 1974. As of 1922 he did regular solo exhibitions and nowadays his major works are to be found in important public collections. The Balinese period contributed mainly portraits and landscapes as well as sceneries of everyday life from the painter's immediate surroundings. As Strasser had been trained by his father and two leading Austrian artists at the Academy, i.e. the symbolist painter Rudolf Jettmar and the portrait painter Julius Schmid, his oil and watercolour paintings unveil traces of documentary painting combined with expressionist brush strokes - Provenance: Property from a German private collection, since 1920's - Minor wear, partly slightly retouched and rest., light visibile traces of the stretch frame, mounted on stretch frame
