The front of the cover is decorated with a panel in high relief depicting a narrative military scene, most likely from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, surrounded by a border of grape and flower vines, the reverse is carved in relief with prunus and rocks, surrounded by a border of shuangxi characters and Buddhist knot. The sides of the box are decorated with flowers and precious objects. The interior is set with a further structure with openwork relief narrative panels. The aprons of the stand are delicately carved and pierced with squirrel and grapes, all supported on four Buddhist lion feet.Condition: There are some areas of minor areas of repair, including to the edges of the front of the box, with some areas restuck, including the head of one of the figures and the corner of a panel; the front panel has been reinforced to the reverse; to the Buddhist lion feet, the edges of the stand, and two of the openwork panels.Chips to the extremities, fine lacquer crackles and wear to the gilding, a few small insect holes to the cover, all consistent with age and use.The carved design is well-executed and well-preserved.Origin: ChinaPeriod: 19th centurySizes: 31.20 cm.
