Medieval hurdy gurdy. Germany. Beginning of the 15th century, head made of a solid piece of wood, the swivel mounted, left side attachment slot for leather straps, body and head mounted with iron nails, turned wheel with iron crank, mounted on a shaft (this still rotatable), flat bottom, tangent box still complete with all buttons, under this textile remains, age-related condition, worm-eaten, dry-cracked, two vertebrae missing. The hurdy-gurdy was discovered in 1994 during the conversion of a late medieval house near the city wall of the city of Konstanz on Lake Constance. An X-ray examination took place at the University of Erlangen. The piece was last exhibited in the Gosla Music Instrument Museum (was there the highlight of the collection). L. approx. 61.5 cm, B. max. approx. 31 cm, H. body approx. 12 cm.
