Alexander Vasilievitsch Gine (Russia, 1830 - 1880) Painting of a moonlit encampment scene. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Sight Size: 12 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 17 x 22 in. Provenance: Private Estero Florida collection. He was a classmate of Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832-1898), probably one of the most famous Russian landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century. They both strived for a career as a painter and Shishkin became an important source of inspiration in many ways. From about 1855 to 1865 Gine studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1858/59, Gine traveled to the island of Valaam in Lake Ladoga, where he discovered beautiful landscapes and innumerable subjects for his paintings. Works by Aleksandr Vasil'evich Gine can be found in museums such as the Tret'jakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the State Art Museum in Kazan.
