Greece, Athens (Attica), ca. 6th to 5th century CE. A gorgeous vessel in the form of a standing woman. Her slender, youthful body, draped artistically in a himation, forms the cavity of the vessel, shown in high relief on one side, with the remains of white pigment. She is posed dynamically, with one foot forward, and one arm reaching up to play what looks like a lute held on one shoulder. A large, applied flower is above her head, resting at the base of the narrow spout, which flares outward to a wide rim. A tiny loop handle projects from the back of the spout. The other side of the vessel is undecorated, and painted a glossy black. Who does this young woman represent? Perhaps a mourner, as this vessel was likely intended to hold offerings in the grave, or perhaps one of the Muses.
