The background is equally certainly not Lawrence. Dr. Kenneth Garlick, english art historian and author of the catalogue raisonnee of paintings by Thomas Lawrence, made a comment about this work in a letter written to the former owner of this painting: "... I think the portrait is the work of two hands. The head seem to be to an early Lawrence -1795 - 1805- and possibly, but less certainly, the body. The background is equally certainly not Lawrence. Nor I think, are the table, book, etc. Lawrence began and did not finish, a number of portraits. Seine William Layman served until 1788 in the Navy before he was employed in the following years by the East India Company. Mainly he was responsable for the trading with China. We think that this painting can be dated about 1795. William Layman was a friend of Admiral Nelson and soon after 1800 he worked again for the Royal Navy. Layman commanded a ship as Captain which tragically ran aground and sank. He ended his life in 1830. Dating the painting between 1788 and 1800 corresponds to the fashion style of the portrayed. His clothing in 'buff and blue' indicates his sympathy for the Whig Party. It is likely that the church's spire in the background belongs to the St. Pauls Cathedral. Further a ship is lying in the dry dock. These local circumstances speak for the location of the warehouse of the East India Company in the area of the upper Thames. The presented attributes in the painting lead to the conclusion that the old attribution of Christie's in 1931 being a portray of William Layman is correct. Expertise: Letter of Kenneth Garlick, Oxford 17th of February 1997. SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE 1769 Bristol - 1830 London PORTRAIT EINES GENTLEMANS- WILLIAM LAYMAN (1768-1826) Öl auf Leinwand (altdoubl.). 127 cm x 102 cm. Verso: Eine Nummer (Christie's: SX 075 (?)). Rahmen. Provenienz: - Auktion Christie's, London; 20.November 1931, lot 132 (Abb.) versteigert als William Beechey: Portrait William Layman - Auktion Parke Bernet, New York; September 1943, lot 251 (Abb. 173) als William Beechey: Portrait of a Gentleman; - Privatsammlung New York; Mr. and Mrs Mark Lulinsky; - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Als Leihgabe von Januar 1958 bis Februar 1964 mit einer Zuschreibung an Joshua Reynolds: Portrait des Frederick, Viscount Duncannon; - Privatsammlung NRW. I think the portrait is the work of two hands. The head seem to be to an early Lawrence -1795 - 1805- and possibly, but less certainly, the body. The background is equally certainly not Lawrence. Nor I think, are the table, book, etc. Lawrence began and did not finish , a number of portraits. ...'' Februar 1997. Provenienz: Europäische Privatsammlung.
