|蝉是我国常见农家草虫，因其餐风饮露被视为高洁的一种象征。同时又因其可脱壳重生而被视为再生的象征。故而在我国汉代，蝉常被雕刻为玉蝉含于逝者口中，以期早日重生。汉代十分重视玉蝉的雕琢，常有精炼快意的刀法琢就，故而有“汉八刀”之美誉。此件玉蝉以日常所见蝉为基本造型，扁薄体，刀法犀利，局部有扎手之感，具有“汉八刀”之风韵。局部受沁，更是彰显其古朴雅致。
