A PAIR OF CARVED WOODEN FIGURES OF BUDDHIST DEITIES. Edo period. Representing Bodhidharma (Daruma) and Daigen Garanjin, both seated on a stand, finely carved and painted in polychrome and gilt over gesso, with inlaid eyes, 43.8cm. (4) 達磨、伽藍人木像 Literature: Gerard Hawthorn Ltd., Chinese and Japanese Sculpture, 2003. , the patriarch of Buddhism was born in and said to have the meditation teaching (zazen) of Zen Buddhism in China, whereas Garanjin was a Chinese Buddhist scholar who studies Buddhist scriptures in order to attain an enlightenment. Both are worshipped as the guardian of Buddhism in Japan.
