A RARE JAPANESE GOLD AND SHAKUDO OJIME MEIJI 1868-1912 Depicting a standing man with a long sword, possibly Shoki the Demon Queller, a ferocious expression on his face and with a long beard and hair, wearing robes decorated with the Shimazu mon of a black cross on a circle, together with a copy of the International Society Journal, 2cm. (2) Provenance: An English private collection, Surrey. Cf. The International Netsuke Society Journal, vo.22, no.3, Fall 2002, p.55, where N K Davey discusses this very piece. The fact that it bears the crest for the Shimazu Lords of Satsuma indicates that it was probably made as a special commission.
