The painting originally from the collection of Wang Fang 王昉, the son of poet and statesman Wang Yongbin 王用賓 (1882-1944), Republican Minister ofJustice 1934-1937 and good friend and political disciple of Dr. Sun Yat-sen 孫中山, Wang Fang (1899 - 1975) also active in politics and part of the funeral committee for Dr. Sun Yat-sen along with painter Yu Youren. By descent to the parents of the current owners around to time of their wedding in Chongqing in 1945. The father of the present owners was was given a number of paintings before he left for medical studies in Toronto, Canada in 1949, 2 were sold to the Royal Ontario Museum at that time. The rest were retained by the family, including this Zhao Zhiqian painting.
