Blue Quarzite and Jasperite Carving--"Under the Sea"
This large carving, created from a single piece of rough, displays many desirable traits and excellent usage of the natural stone. Such a sculpture would have taken many months to painstakingly produce. The white areas have been used to give the illusion of white branch coral, whilst the blue areas form tropical fish, sea stars, anemones, and kelp. The red and black Jasperite has been used to depict sting rays, sea turtles, a seahorse and two octopi. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock made almost entirely of the mineral quartz. Quartzite is usually white or light-colored because quartz sand is light colored--in rarer instances, such as this, it can be found in blue and in association with other minerals such as Jasperite. The hardness of the Quartzite at a Mohs 7 makes it harder than many stones to carve, but by the same token allows for a high polish to larger smooth surfaces such as the fishes bodies. Measuring 12 x 11 1/2 x 5 in
