A pair of Italian bronze models of the Riace Warriors, post 1972, cast after the Antique, portrayed as nude and standing, with pronounced musculature, each on a square cut tufa stone pedestal with applied plaque inscribed GUERRIERI di RIACE, 47.5cm high The original Riace Warriors after which these were cast are probably of 5th century BC Greek origin. Large quantities of Greek sculpture was removed back to Italy by the Romans, but clearly in this case, at the first attempt the bronzes did not reach their destination -the ship being wrecked. The statues were discovered by Stefano Mariottini in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Riace Marina, Italy on August 16, 1972, and are now held at the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio, Calabria
