(vol. 1-3 and Appendix to vol. 2), FIRST EDITION, vol. 3 with second issue title and half-title, 3 half-titles (as called for), 24-page smaller format publisher's catalogue at end of Appendix, 9 folding engraved maps (all laid on cloth, one hand-coloured in outline), 47 engraved or etched plates, charts and diagrams, slight discolouration to maps, occasional light browning or spotting to plates, modern green half morocco, t.e.g. [cf. Freeman 10 for vols 1, 2 and Appendix, and Freeman 11 for vol. 3; Hill 607; cf. Norman 584; Sabin 37826], 8vo, Henry Colburn, 1839
|The third volume is Darwin's "first published book [and] is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to On the origin of Species as the most often printed" (Freeman p.31). This volume was published under two different titles: the first issue with the title starting Narrative of the Surveying Voyages..., and the second issue (as here) with the title Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History.... This second issue was also available as a separate work.
