A good collection of 20 views from Shackletons's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, including images of the "Endurance" in the ice, landscapes and groups, gelatin silver prints (160 x 204mm., and smaller), 2 annotated on the verso, [1914-1917, printed later] (20)
|Images include (the first eight captions taken from the Hurley album in the Royal Collection, see The Heart of the Great Alone, 2009): "Glacier, Moraine Fjord, South Georgia, 24 November 1914"; "Typical pack ice, Weddell Seas... December 1914"; "Strenuous endeavours being made to free the ship from frozen captivity... 15 February 1915"; "The Endurance forced out of the ice by the coming together of the floes, 18 October 1915"; "Young King penguin in the first year plumage, South Georgia 1914"; "Gentoo penguin with egg, South Georgia, 1917"; "The first hot food after five days in the boats, 15 April 1916"; "The Dudley Docker arrives at Cape Valentine, Elephant Island, 15 April 1916"; (the following 5 captions taken from the collection of the Scott Polar Research Institute:) "The Endurance on its Journey South Through the Weddell Sea"; "The Endurance trapped in the pack ice"; "Leonard Hussey with Samson and another dog"; "A Camp scene on the ice"; "A flock of Cape Pigeons on the sea"; "Pressure hummocks thrown up close to the ship at Ocean Camp. 16 February 1915". The following we have not traced on either of the above locations: View of glaciers and mountains (2); View of large iceberg and smaller ice floe; group of penguins; bookshelves in Shackleton's cabin aboard Endurance; unidentified man standing on the ice.
