American lawyer, government official, author, and lecturer (1904-1996), famously accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. Three items signed in black ballpoint or fountain pen by Alger Hiss: an ALS dated March 8, 1955 ("There is a certain irony in the request & in my inability to comply with it—so many hundreds of photographs have been taken of me by the press, without a by-you-leave, over the past six and a half years that one would think that the demand was over supplied!"); an ALS from August 5, 1988 ("I've had quite a few letters from friend and well-wishes about my book. That has most definitely been one of the benefits I've derived from writing the book"); and a clipped color satin-finish 2.25 x 3.5 photo of Hiss in older age, signed on the reverse by Hiss, who dates the photo to "Aug. 5, 1988." In overall fine condition, with staple holes to the letters. Accompanied by two original mailing envelopes, both of which are addressed by Hiss, who has incorporated his name into both return address fields, "Hiss" and "Alger Hiss."
