Like many of the most important "unofficial" and "non-conformist" artists of the Soviet Union, both Ilya Kabakov and Erik Bulatov were commerical illustrators of popular childrens' books. Interestingly, many of the concepts and compositions expressed in this childrens' literature, continued to impact the ouevre of both artists in their non-commercial works. For this reason, the books in this collection are especially valuable, even in an art-historical context.
