A Chinese Qing dynasty carved bamboo eighteen Luohans brush pot, Qing dynasty. A desirable bamboo carved brush pot richly carved in varying levels of relief with the eighteen Luohans, engaging in various activities depicting their various attributes to exercise their respected powers. The continuous cylindrical scene is rendered with rural landscapes, arboured with overhanging pine amidst cloud forms and rocky promontories. A tiger is included, expected given the presence of the talking Monk; Fou Hu - the tiger hunter (see notes on additional information). However, additional symbolism can be noted in the companionship of deer, a much beloved creature associated with immortals and good fortune. Most strikingly is the company of an elephant. The bamboo displaying a handsome patina of rich honey brown, with an attractive grain ending on a circular foot. Remnants of original scholars ink remain on the interior.
