After the Antique, a large bronze figure of the Borghese Warrior
French, early 20th centuryWith arms outstretched in combat, and raised on a rouge rectangular marble plinth, with presentation plaque dated 1910, 50cm high
|The original Greek figure group with tree trunk bears the name of Agasias of Ephesus. Rediscovered in the 17th century at Antium, it passed into the Borghese collection in 1611. Bought from his brother-in-law by Prince Camille Borghese, the statue arrived in 1808 at the Louvre. Initially it was mistakenly referred to as a Roman gladiator, before the figure's shield-strap on the left arm identified him as a Greek warrior.
