After the model by Michel Sigisbert-François (1728-1811).Decorated with fruiting vines, the spout mounted with a satyr, 23cm wide, 17cm deep, 38cm high (9in wide, 6 1/2in deep, 14 1/2in high)
|The design for this ewer is after sculptor Michel Sigisbert-François. Originally intended as a pair, (the other mounted with a a triton and a garland of water reeds, symbolising water, whilst this one with vines symbolises wine) they are based on plaster models exhibited at the Academy of Saint Luke in Paris. Michel was the eldest brother of the French sculptor, Clodion.The original ewers made circa 1775 by Sigisbert-François are housed in the Getty Museum, object number: 2015.61.
