A large gilt bronze lamp base
In the Empire style and after Jacob-DesmalterThe tole painted shade decorated with Napoleonic bees supported by a female caryatid, facing outward with her hair in plaits, on a classical plinth with applied gilt-metal motifs, 56cm wide, 56cm deep, 138cm high (22in wide, 22in deep, 54in high)
|The female caryatid supporting the shade is near identical (except in not having armbands) to the caryatid designed by Jacob-Desmalter for the famous 'console double face' supplied by the craftsman for the apartment of Napoleon's sister, Caroline Murat at the l'Elysée Palace in 1808, now in the Salon des Aides de Camp at the Grand Trianon in Versailles. Literature:Michael Beurdeley, Georges Jacob (1739-1814) et son Temps, Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau, 2002, p. 97, illustrates the above mentioned console table by Jacob-Desmalter.
