Book cover
Wood carved,
Tibet / Nepal, 13th / 14th century
L: 40 cm
This particular book cover has a decorative band and beaded rim on the outside, encasing a depiction of Buddha in the middle, and Tibetan script as well as a depiction of Bodhisattvas on both his sides. The two Bodhisattvas on the outside are quite similar, sitting in relaxed royal pose and forming a mudra with their right hand, the left hand is raised in front of the chest. On the left side behind them is growing a lotus flower. Both are wearing a three-pointed tiara. The Buddha in the middle is sitting on a lotus base in lotus pose, left hand in meditation gesture and right hand raised in front of his chest. He is framed by an alcove showing two animals at the bottom and ornamental decorations at the top.
Tibetan books were an important vehicle to transmit Buddhist teachings. They were usually printed or written on rectangular sheets, which were then placed on top of each other between two wooden book covers and wrapped in cloth, to protect them from ageing and debris. The use of wood was rare and expensive as it had to be transported over high passes from countries with a high tree population like Nepal, Bhutan or India. The bookcovers were usually decorated with fine carvings like this one and kept in Buddhist monasteries.
