A LARGE AND RARE KONDH TRIBAL BRONZE OF A PEACOCKA LARGE AND RARE KONDH TRIBAL BRONZE OF A PEACOCKCopper bronzeEastern India, Kondh Tribe, late 19th – early 20th centuryThis very large bronze of a peacock, with button eyes and a long sharp beak, is depicted here with ornate crest feathers and many spirals which extend throughout the spine in half circles to the short tail feathers, indicating a female specimen. The long neck is arranged in segments with dense lines separated by knotted rope rings. The flight feathers are very short and are attached to the body with a circular spiral and the plumage is expressed very well with the characteristic ‘wire mesh pattern’ of the Kondh tribe. The two long avian feet meet at the bottom on a circular base, which makes the bird stand upright.
