BOYLE, ROBERT. 1627-1691.
Medicinal Experiments; Or, A Collection Of Choice Remedies, For The Most Part Simple, And Easily Prepared. London: Sam Smith, 1692. 2 volumes bound as one as issued. 12mo (137 x 80 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked. Very minor marginal worming, one leaf torn with small loss to text.FIRST EDITION. This volume is Boyle's only publication entirely devoted to medicine, consisting of the author's preface, where he gives a history of his own health, including his kidney troubles, and a short catalogue of various ailments and their remedies typical to Boyle's day. "There are numerous statements in this astonishing collection of nostrums which might shatter one's confidence in Boyle's judgment, but in charity it is perhaps better to look upon them as a commentary on the state of medicine in the 17th century..." (Fulton, A Bibliography of the Honourable Robert Boyle, 118). Boyle lists remedies such as "an amulet against agues," "a rare medicine to take away gouty and other arthritick pains," "a water for ulcers and sores," and "an experienc'd medicine for strengthning a weak sight."
