Jacobi, the first woman to graduate from the L'Ecole de Medecine, was "one of the most distinguished and important women physicians of the late nineteenth century... Jacobi's work as a physician and researcher was closely tied to her role as a political activist, for matters of health intertwined with questions about the status of women" (DMB 3, pp 698-699).
