Provenance: Dr. Thor Jager (bookplate); Clendening Medical Library, University of Kansas (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the first work on the etiology of tuberculosis. Using the plate culture technique Koch developed for cultivating bacteria, "the first consistent method for obtaining pure cultures of virtually any species of bacteria ... and applying his skill in the use of the microscope and experimental animals, Koch was able to show that tuberculosis was caused by a specific bacterium ...
