MAYO, WILLIAM J. and CHARLES H.
A Collection of Papers Published Previous to 1909. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders & Company, 1912 2 volumes. 8vo (248 x 157 mm). Publisher's blue cloth. Minor wear to cloth, ex-library, with call numbers to spines and stamps to title pages. Provenance: John George Adami (bookplate); University of Liverpool (bookplate).FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE MAYO BROTHERS. Inscribed "With kind regards, W. J. Mayo" with Charles H. Mayo's signature underneath. A rare presentation copy of this compilation from the Mayo brothers' early years in medicine. While their development of the hospital through an innovative model of multispecialty group practice remains profoundly influential, the Mayo brothers were both highly skilled surgeons in their own right. Charles specialized in surgery relating to the thyroid and nervous system, while William focused on surgery of the abdomen, pelvis, and kidneys. After Harvey Cushing visited Rochester in 1905 he informed his physician father that the Mayo brothers "have built up a wonderful operative clinic and are well protected by an able staff of internists, specialists, etc. and are little likely to make mistakes....They do as good and as much surgery in their own particular lines as any other two men in the world" (Fye, Caring for The Heart: Mayo Clinic and the Rise of Specialization, p. 23).
