First edition.THE NEW YORK HOSPITAL is the second oldest hospital in the United States. "Although the New York Hospital obtained a Royal Charter in 1771, it did not function during the colonial period. Its original buildings were destroyed by fire as they were nearing completion in 1775, and new buildings were under construction when British troops occupied New York City. These buildings served as soldier's barracks during the war and were not utilized as a hospital until 1791" (Bordley and Harvey, Two Centuries of American Medicine. Philadelphia, 1976).
