OSLER PRESENTATION COPY.
PAYNE, JOSEPH FRANK. 1840-1910. Thomas Sydenham (Masters of Medicine). New York: Longmans, Green & Co., 1900. 8vo (195 x 136 mm). Publisher's gilt-stamped green cloth. Browning to leaves, small tear to top edge of half-title. Provenance: Dorothy Reed (1874-1969, her signature, dated "JHH" 1900).PRESENTATION COPY TO DOROTHY REED with Osler's calling card, on which he has written "With Xmas Greetings" corner mounted on the endpaper. Reed, one of the first women to attend Johns Hopkins, interned under Osler starting in 1900. The following year, she joined William Welch's lab as a pathology fellow. There, at only 28 years of age, she discovered the Reed-Sternberg cell. This discovery enabled the clear diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease, and proved that it was a form of cancer, not tuberculosis.
