The 1862 original edition of Duchenne was the first medical book with photographic illustrations of living subjects. Duchenne describes the 9 "synoptic tables," containing 144 separate photographic images, on the pages following the plates. Darwin was allowed by Duchenne to copy these photographs for his book, and duly gave credit for Duchenne's careful study and its contribution to the study of human physiology.
