In 1912 he published a breakthrough article in the Journal of the American Medical Association describing the symptoms of myocardial infarction and linking the attacks to coronary thrombosis. He was also a pioneer in promoting the use of the electrocardiogram in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. William B. "Bill" Bean (1899-1989) was the first president of the American Osler Society. He became a good friend (and father figure) to Bruce Fye through their involvement in the American Osler Society and the American Association for the History of Medicine.
