此件羊首砚呈钟形，器物通身绘有云气几何纹样，大气和谐，砚台内有一羊首，汉代许慎释“羊”字说：“美，甘也。从羊从大。”明末清初屈大均套用许慎的模式，“羊”、“祥”通假。西汉大儒董仲舒有云：“羊，祥也，故吉礼用之。”《汉书 南越志》记："尉佗之时，有五色羊，以为瑞。"
