祁阳石因产湖南祁阳而得名，在文震亨《长物志》中有“永石”条目：“永石，即祁阳石，出楚中。石不坚，色好者有山、水、日、月、人物之象。紫花者稍胜，然多是刀刮成，非自然者，以手摸之，凹凸者可验，大者以制屏亦雅”。永石即永州石，明清以来备受文人雅士喜爱和推崇，祁阳石质地细滑而沉，可用于琢制砚台，以此大材制座屏，亦别有趣味。
