A boxwood netsuke of a kirinKyoto, late 18th centurySeated on its haunches, its long neck twisted and its head raised as it bays to the sky, its single horn and its ears drawn back over its neck joining its long erect tail, flames licking up the sides of its scaly body, the slightly-worn wood bearing a good patina and the pupils inlaid, unsigned, with a wood storage box. 10.2cm (4in) high. Two smaller examples of the subject treated in a similar manner and possibly by the same anonymous maker have also been recorded. One from the M. T. Hindson Collection, illustrated by N. Davey, MTH, p.387, no.1160, was subsequently sold in these rooms, Fine Japanese Art, 10 November 2011, lot 64. Another is illustrated by B. Okada and M. Neill, RIB, p.30, no.2.
