早年毕业于上海法政学堂，先后在苏沪两地任司法行政官、律师，曾任吴县律师公会会长，兼任东吴大学法学教授。抗战前夕，沈钧儒、邹韬奋等“七君子”遭国民党逮捕，吴曾善为之辩护。抗战爆发前夕曾任苏州抗日后援会会长。苏州沦陷期间迁居上海，以卖字画（与丰子恺、吴湖帆、张继馨等合作）维持生计。1954年任上海市文史馆馆员，从事古籍整理文字改革工作。|
