Marie-Thérèse la Popelinière, était la fille de Mondran, l’urbaniste de Toulouse, grand collectionneur et fondateur de l’académie des arts de Toulouse. Jeune femme raffinée, musicienne capable de chanter et de jouer la comédie, elle épousa la Popelinière, fermier général de son état et libertin accompli, lui aussi grand collectionneur. Lemoyne a choisi de la représenter dans la pose caractéristique de trois quarts qui donne une impression de spontanéité, avec ce petit air de beauté spirituelle à la française, dans le goût « rocaille » ou « Louis XV » de la période.
