吴冠中多以简约的风格刻画江南水乡，画面朴素静美。此幅《江南柳堤人家》，天空用淡墨渲染，似乎是即将来临的春雨，滋润万物。信手红蓝是江边人家晾晒的旧衣裳，点至黄绿则是岸上柳树长出的新叶芽。屋前五柳自古为「不戚戚于贫贱，不汲汲于富贵」的陶渊明所好，或许吴冠中借此间语境托物言志；充满动态的柳树又像舞蹈中的精灵，亦或许这是吴冠中用笔墨谱写的一首素丽高雅的江南小调。
