A Chinese textile picture of 'The Three Heroes of Han' (Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei) beside a two-line inscription, framed and glazed, overall dimensions 88 x 57 cmFor a similar composition illustrating these three major protagonists from the history of The Three Kingdoms (220-280 AD) compare the painting in The Field Museum, Chicago by Sekkan Sakurai (1715-1790). This triumvirate also appear in Japanese netsuke and okimono (cf. Henri Joly's 'Legend in Japanese Art', page 533). Joly also states that Guan Yu was deified as God of War in 1594.. Please note that there are areas of deterioration, creasing and light or other damage to this picture. It has not been possible to extract this picture from the frame in order to examine condition or damage on the reverse.
