The collapse of Manchu Imperial Law that characterised the reign of Hsien Feng (1851-1861) was mainly brought about by the Taiping rebels. Hong Xiuquan, the charismatic leader of the Taiping cause, was moved by visions to oppose both the traditional order of Confucius and the Imperial regime; he received huge support from across China from those marginalised or forgotten by a legal and bureaucratic system that had lost all integrity and direction..
