Grotesque. SERIES OF THREE RARE PRINTS. The poet, the fool, the beggar.Rome, early 700s
Etchings; 3 plates of mm. 302x182, 303x186, 302x178; Subjects within an engraved frame, below description in verse. Good condition.
Three very rare etching plates portraying a poet and musician, an importunate beggar, an old jester in search of fortune accentuating the elements of deformity and extravagance: the verses in the eighth rhyme down below comments sarcastically on the characters. The grotesque figures are closely linked to the decoration based on bizarre and fantastic motifs, born in the '500 in Rome following the discovery of the wall paintings in the underground rooms of the Nero Domus Aurea, then called "grotte" (in Italian). The sign reveals the skillful hand of a master engraver of the Roman school.
