Ink and Watercolor, Cafe Scene, by Jules PascinJulius Mordecai Pincas (March 31, 1885 Â June 5, 1930), was known as Pascin (pronounced Pass Kin,) an anagram from his name, avoiding the shame an artist son would impart on his Sephardic Jewish father. Perhaps it was a good thing since his wild bohemian lifestyle and wine consumption at nightly Parisian parties rewarded him with the title ÂThe Prince of MontparnasseÂ. Born in Bulgaria , he is best known as a painter of the School of Paris who strongly identified with the Modernist movement and other artistic circles of Montparnasse. Alcoholism, a lifetime of depression, and self doubt in his work, lead to his suicide the night before a very prestigious one-man show. In this charming ink and watercolor on paper, a middle aged woman ,wearing a stylish blue hat, rests her right elbow on the table of a street side cafe, seemingly enjoying the company of a fashionably mustached.gentleman. c. 1920 - 1930. Studion stamp on verso. 12 x 9 inches
