After Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857), an alabaster bust of Goethe, inscribed 'Goethe' on the front and 'Chr: Rauch' verso, 32cm high Provenance: The Property of a Prominent West Country Collector. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German writer and statesman. The design for this bust was created during a competition. The first form was made by Rauch in 1821. It is exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig. As a result, numerous workshop replicas were created, signed on the back shoulder with 'Chr. Rauch'.
